Updates on the way…

I know it’s been way too long since I updated the site, but I’ve been busy here. Had some great projects to work on and have learned a lot in my trade. Even finally want to express my view on the whole no-flash-on-mobile conversation, aka Flash is dying. Digging into some more tablets and AIR works. So there’s more to come (if I can find time)…

Embracing Twitter…again…

I was a huge fan of twitter when everyone thought it was a dumb idea but I loved it for different reasons. I would make quick posts about what I was working on and my fellow devs would too. So we followed each other and had ‘digital scrums’ almost throughout the day. It was great, then it became so much about meaningless information that I lost interest in it. I always pulled for Twitter and hoped they would succeed, I never stopped thinking it was a great idea.

So a couple years pass and I’m now back into twitter, not for the mainstream “Follow-your-celeb-news” reasons but as a “quick-hitting-lean-mean” RSS feed. Since upgrading my phone (Samsung Galaxy S and loving Android) and getting into mobile apps, I’m in the process of tweaking my twitter account and leveraging lists to provide useful information.

So I’m back to twitter and we’ll see how long this road lasts…

Versus – Multi-Sport Scoreboard

Multi-Sports Scoreboard:

viewing college football scores

A small project for Versus.com that really turned into a nice project. This pure actionscript Flex builder 3 project pulls data from an external scores feed. The SWF file is designed to show both College Football and NHL (National Hockey League) scores. The scoreboard will also allow the user to click through to either a preview or a recap on the versus domain. If the game is not over, the user would see the preview, otherwise they would get redirected to the versus recap page of the game.

The feed has an auto update feature and will show scores as games progress. The single SWF but multi-purpose SWF allowed Versus.com to embed the same SWF in multiple URLs and only change flashvars.  Built in Flex builder 3 as a pure actionscript project with using a Flash FLA library for visual assests. I also leveraged the CasaLib library as much as I could. Still loving and using CasaLib. If you don’t know, go check it out: CasaLib

This project was pretty cool to show how a single SWF can support two different sport scores. Saved a ton of time as compared to building two separate projects for College Football and NHL scores.

Refocused

Many crazy things going on…..been working on getting a PV3D based portfolio site up and have been making progress. Along with working with some new frameworks, things are busy but frustrating. Sometimes I think if I would just stick to what I know, I’d live alot easier.

Whole new world

So I’m now getting into the world of photography after purchasing a Canon Rebel t1i. My fiancee and I took a vacation to Jamaica and I had a blast with it. I had the lens kit (15-55mm) for the trip and I could really feel myself ‘maxing’ it out. I’m really thinking about trying to find some classes or some additional information (reading only gets me so far) on how to really use the camera. If I could choose a second career, it’d be photography.

I ended up getting the 28-135mm lens and have yet to play with it. So clear and crisp it’s breathtaking just to take everyday pics. I still can’t get over how fast the auto focus is and just how powerful a DSLR can be. I’m sure I only scratched the surface….

Flash Builder 4

Some really sweet stuff here. Really feels like the Flex editor environment is getting a well deserved make-over. I still have a serious issue with not having the option to have a quick key push to the Flash IDE for compile. Most of my projects now are actionscript based and compile within the editor….but there’s still a need when freelancing to take a .fla file that others are working on and still compile in the .fla.

Testing out a new platform

Well, seems I’m now going to start testing out thePlatform (http://www.theplatform.com/about/) and what media services they offer. Really I’m now in the read-it-like-a-book articles, blogs and just about anything I can get my hands on. Funny thing is, they’re saying they only support swf assets from CS4? ouch, looks like I need to get my hands on a copy. As much as I complained about Brightcove, it was pretty easy to use and develop for. I’m already having a hell of a time getting set up and running some demos……

PC + new Mac Experience

My first post for my own personal pc to mac experience.

Soooo…I need to get a mac for my job. I’m a flash developer and as nice as people have told me macs were, I always heard development on a mac is a little “different”. For that reason alone, I always thought about the newer (since they went intel based) macs and how you can run anything on them. Long story short, I need a mac and I need to get a macbook pro 17in laptop.

Order it, obsess over shipping dates, pay for it, sign for it, open box…

I’m pretty busy during the day and can’t really sit down with it yet….finally get to start getting it set up.  I’ve been doing alot of flex development lately and thus, Adobe FLEX builder 3 is one of the first apps to go. Pretty easy…

I install parallels so I can still have my windows tools and feel ‘safe’. I get parallels and windows 7 beta up and running. Again, pretty easy.

Happy so far? yes…surprised? very…

Details on my experience to come…
